In a major achievement for India, Hyderabad won the overall ‘World Green City Award 2022’, along with an award for ‘Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth’ on October 14 in South Korea. The International Association of Horticulture Producers (AIPH) 2022 World Green City Awards 2022 were held in Jeju Islands, where the city bagged the prestigious titles.
The City of Pearls beat international destinations such as Paris, Bogota, Mexico City, Montreal, and Fortaleza in Brazil, along with several others, to be crowned a World Green City. At the dinner gala which marked the awards, the Republic of Korea recognised Hyderabad’s ‘nature-orientated approaches to city design and operation.
The award tries to recognise the best practices in landscaping, cultivating plants and flowers. One of the awards that Hyderabad received, in the ‘Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth’ category, recognised the city’s large-scale tree-plantation programme, ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram’. Apart from this, the state has taken several other initiatives to increase its green cover and become an overall eco-friendly state.
