Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport is all ready to become the 3rd international airport in the north-eastern area after a Rs. 438 crore project under construction is completed in March 2021, Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials stated on 04 Jan.

An AAI official had said that all the construction work has been completed and the interior work of the new integrated terminal building of MBB Airport is in progress.

An AAI official confirmed that the Tripura government is keen to commence air connectivity with Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries from the Agartala airport. The MBB Airport is specifically developed to handle 1,000 domestic and 200 international passengers during rush hours, giving it an annual handling capacity of three million passengers.

“Advanced intelligent building management systems have been used to optimise the consumption of energy,” the official added. It is designed on a 30,000 square metre area that has the capacity to park six aircrafts at a time. It will also have 20 check-in counters, four passenger boarding bridges, conveyor belts and passenger-friendly modern facilities and amenities.

The art and craft of the airport is also beautifully designed all over the terminal in the form of sculptures, ‘jaali’ work, furniture and murals. The airport is established 20 km north of the capital city of Agartala and sits just along the India-Bangladesh border.
